European price cuts Ion Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox and Nintendo Co.'s GameCube have led to wide speculation that Sony Computer Entertainment of America will drop the price of its PlayStation 2 below $299 in North America when the Electronic Entertainment Expo opens this month in Los Angeles. Some say, maybe not.
Console price reductions are usually made to shore up or acquire market share, which hasn't been a problem for SCEA. According to estimates released by securities firm Credit Suisse First Boston, through March, 70,000-plus PS2s were sold each week compared to 60,000-plus Xboxes and GameCubes combined.
