A II copies of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone are copy-portected to prevent Internet piracy, but not all carry the Macrovision Corp, encoding to guard against copying to videocassette, a Warner Bros. spokesman said last week. A financial analyst who covers Macrovision said tests of Potter DVDs showed that viewers can make a high-quality copy to a VHS tape because the discs are not protected by the Macrovision technology, which has been used for DVDs since 1997.

The Warner Bros. spokeswoman said the Potter DVDs are 100% encrypted and "piracy deterrents are employed" to guard against copying and distribution the Internet. Regarding Warner's use of copy protection on Harry Patter, a Macrovision spokesperson had no comment. However, she noted...
