The DVD Forum will develop the high-definition optical disc format proposed by Toshiba Corp. and NEC Corp., according to Japan's Kyodo News (VB, 9-2). It will develop the Toshiba/NEC blue-laser proposal with the goal of creating an HD version of DVD within the next few years. The selection puts the DVD Forum in competition with the Blu-ray Disc consortium, a group of consumer electronics makers--all DVD Forum members--that has already demonstrated its own blue-laser HD disc solution.
