It's clear that retailers anxious about the economy this year have been trying to pull holiday shoppers into stores early. According to BizRate.com it's working, at least for online retailers. The comparison shopping site, which surveys consumers who shop more than 2,000 online retailers, reports that consumer spending online shot up to $4.3 billion in October, a robust increase of 39% compared to the same month last year.

Orders jumped a comparable 40% to 29.9 million, while the average purchase amount held steady at about $145. Based partially on strong October sales, BizRate is forecasting that consumers will spend $8 billion online between Nov. 25 and Dec. 25 this year, a 24% increase, and that total fourth-quarter sales will hit $16.8...
