When mass retailing giant Wal-Mart Stores announced in October that it would challenge market leader Netflix Corp. in the still-niche DVD rental business, VB decided to play the role of a consumer and test the two services.

VB signed up for a one-month subscription to each service and initially tried to rent the same movies from each. Many titles weren't immediately available from Wal-Mart, an upstart in this space.

Netflix started in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998 and now claims 740,000 subscribers nationwide, with 12 distribution centers to ship and receive DVDs.
