MGM is releasing West Side Story as a double-disc special edition on April 1 (prebook March 4; $39.99) in a limited quantity. "We want this to feel exclusive to collectors, so we will only make a certain amount available," said MGMVP of domestic marketing Alex Carloss. "Really, this is about developing the right program for the title.
This is a very special title and it deserves special treatment." MGM sold more than 1.5 million copies of the 1961 film on VHS, and the company expects the new DVD to perform as well. The previous DVD release is on moratorium. The studio spent a couple of years restoring the picture and sound on the film and adding extra material for the DVD, Carloss said.
