LAS VEGAS--With DVD players now in nearly 40% of all U.S. homes, the format is being positioned to do even more heavy lifting in the home entertainment arena. At last week's Consumer Electronics Show, hardware makers and computer companies outlined plans to make DVD players and recorders the centerpieces of wirelessly connected home entertainment networks they hope will form the next wave in the consumer electronics and PC businesses.

However, a few details need to get worked out first--such as determining the form of DVD recording, whose software should power such networks and how the expected growth of high-definition video will be integrated. The growth of home networking could also raise tricky questions about copy protection and digital rights...
