NEW YORK -- After largely staying out of the public debate over online piracy, Blockbuster Video chairman and CEO John Antioco stepped into the fray last week with a speech crediting the video rental market for helping keep a lid on bootlegging and the illegal downloading of movies. "It's video stores like Blockbuster that will help keep movies from following music down the digital downloading drain," Antioco said during a conference sponsored by market research firm the Yankee Group here May 5-6.
Citing Yankee Group research commissioned by Blockbuster, Antioco said that even consumers who admitted to downloading or pirating movies in a survey overwhelmingly preferred renting videotapes and DVDs to other available options. Antioco's speech was...
