Any retailer who has toyed with stocking audio books should be aware of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the 26-hour and 30-minute recitation of J.K. Rowling's latest Potter tome. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Random House is producing a combined 575,000 copies of Phoenix on CD and audiocassette, which the publisher claims is the largest shipment in the history of the genre.

Carrying a hefty $75 price tag for 23 CDs and $45 for 17 audiocassettes, Phoenix might make sense to stock for rental or sale alongside the two Potter films available on video when Potter mania restarts with the June 21 release of the 896-page Phoenix. Deep discounting has already started, but even the $52 Amazon is charging for the CD set is a steep premium...
