A Motorola Inc. set-top box that features digital video recording, high-definition TV capability and a progressive-scan DVD player is getting a wide-scale deployment from cable operator Charter Communications. It's the latest weapon in cable's war against satellite TV.

The device features DVR software and program guides based on the Moxi Digital DVR software platform, developed by WebTV founder Steve Perlman several years ago and acquired last year by Digeo Inc. (VB, 1-07-02). After doing limited testing in its St. Louis headquarters of Motorola's Broadband Media Center, Charter has ordered 100,000 boxes and plans to roll them out in the fourth quarter in Rochester, Minn.
