Nintendo of America fired the first major videogame salvo of the fall last week with an immediate one-third price reduction of its GameCube system to $99. The move aggressively targets Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox, both priced at $179. For Xbox, that price includes two games and a two-month online subscription.
"We're serious about making a statement to Casual gamers," Nintendo senior VP of marketing George Harrison said during a conference call. "You can buy a PS2, or lilt the same money you can buy a GameCube plus two or three games." Nintendo plans to add the Top 10 selling Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime its $19.99-$29.99 Player's Choice program, which offers top games at discounted prices. Harrison said...
