DVD forum gives OK to Microsoft: preliminary approval makes WM9 mandatory in all HD DVD players.(High-Definition)(Windows Media 9)

The Steering Committee of the DVD Forum has given preliminary approval to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Media 9 compression/decompression format as a mandatory component of the HD DVD specification, handing the software giant an important victory in its push to establish its software as a standard for high-definition video.

The committee also gave preliminary approval to MPEG-4 AVC, also known as H.264, and to MPEG-2. If the approvals become final, the ability to decode all three compression systems would have to be built into all licensed HD DVD players. Final approval will be voted on at the next Steering Committee meeting, by which time Microsoft and the other codec sponsors are to provide updated information on the licensing terms and conditions...
