Despite industry concerns that it didn't go low enough to entice value-conscious, first-time console buyers, Microsoft Games confirmed last week that $149 is the new list price for its Xbox. With the Nintendo GameCube at $99, there are those who think $149 might be too high to fuel sales with non-core consumers.
In January, Electronic Arts CFO Warren Jenson warned that the opportunity for a $149 price point for Xbox and the PlayStation 2 from Sony Corp. was past and that EA expected price reductions on both consoles to $129. The Xbox, originally priced at $299 when it debuted in late 2001, had been priced at $179 since May. The PS2 still carries a $179 price tag, and a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment America said there are no plans to...
