Microsoft tests Windows Media 10: software company hopes to challenge Apple.(media player)

Just as Microsoft's Windows Media 9 video format is starting to gain traction in Hollywood, the software giant has begun to offer technology enthusiasts a peak at the newest version of its media player. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft last week posted a test version of Windows Media 10, which incorporates a host of new capabilities not available in earlier versions of the software, including its new digital rights management package dubbed Janus.

The new media player is designed to power various kinds of portable devices and comes bundled with direct links to several online music and movie services, including Movielink, CinemaNow, MusicNow and the relaunched Napster.
