* Sony will release its new PlayStation Portable (PSP) in Japan both earlier and at a lower price than industry analysts expected. The handheld movie-capable game system will bow in Japan Dec. 12, priced at 19,800 yen ($186). Analysts had expected a price as high as 30,000 yen ($283). Twenty-one games are planned for the launch at an average price of $45.
The device will bow in the U.S. in the first quarter. U.S. prices are traditionally lower than in Japan. That would put PSP near the price range of Nintendo's new DS handheld, which launches stateside Nov. 21 priced at $149.
