Almost since it began carrying video in 1985, Pittsburgh-based supermarket chain Giant Eagle has seen itself not as a grocer competing against ocher grocers in video, but as a video retailer competing against other video retailers. It's that view that has made all the difference. While other grocers have dabbled in and out of video during the last two decades, Giant Eagle has continued to focus on the category.
"It's one of the reasons we've been successful," says Chuck Porter, director entertainment merchandising. "We look at it as a business unto itself, and we've devoted resources to it over the years."
