HD DVD nabs three majors: in face-off vs. Blu-ray.

The looming format war over the next-generation DVD standard loomed a little closer last week. Paramount Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video, along with New Line Cinema and HBO Video, said in separate but coordinated announcements that they will begin issuing new releases in the HD DVD format as early as Christmas 2005.

All plan to support the launch of the format with healthy amounts of catalog product as well. The solid studio backing, collectively representing some 41% of DVD sales in the U.S., puts the Toshiba-developed high-definition format on a clear collision course with Sony-backed Blu-ray Disc. So far, Blu-ray can count on the support of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and shortly MGM Home...
