Handheld sales boost videogame retailing: PSP moving well; Nintendo DS price slashed.(VIDEOGAMES)

Handheld videogame systems are giving retailers something to smile about this summer. Despite declining consumer interest in the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube consoles--all set for replacement during the next year--the big news is how well the PlayStation Portable is selling. A newly announced $20 price cut on the Nintendo DS also is likely to make a notable market splash.

Retailers sold through 202,000 PSPs during July, according to recently released NPD Funworld data. That's only 58,000 shy of the number of PS2s sold during the month and 19,000 more units than the Xbox and GameCube combined.
