New format stores stock more discs

Over the next two years, supermarket chain H.E. Butt Grocery Co. (H-E-B) will expand its DVD merchandising as it rolls out up to a dozen new H-E-B Plus stores, which are built around greatly expanded general merchandise sections.

Since 2004, the 300-store chain has opened four H-E-B Plus outlets in Texas. A fifth H-E-B Plus opens in San Antonio, the second in that market, on Nov. 1. All additional H-E-B Plus stores also are slated for Texas, said a company spokeswoman.

These 109,000 to 200,000 square foot outlets carry 40,000 more items than traditional H-E-B stores, including thousands of DVD titles. A standard H-E-B store carries at most a couple hundred DVD titles, in...
