Redmond, Wash. - The licensing of operating software for recycled computers already has created a tiff between Microsoft Corp. and an Australian children's charity. But what are the rules? ``It's a really, really complex issue,'' said Jane Meseck, community affairs program manager for Redmond-based Microsoft.
The software giant has been working for four years to clear up the confusion and misconceptions about what is and what isn't legal when dealing with donated computers and its Windows operating system. ``The PC retains the right to the operating system, that's the message we want to get out,'' Meseck said. ``We want to tell donors to keep the OS on the machine.''
