Nike gets mixed review.

Beaverton, Ore. - Nike Inc.'s first corporate responsibility report has received praise from environmental and industry groups, but some feel the company may be giving lip service to environmental activists.

The report, released Oct. 9, outlines the company's achievements and challenges regarding waste reduction and recycling, among other issues. It reflects the company's efforts since adopting its corporate environmental policy in 1998.

``You will see a few accomplishments and more than a few challenges,'' said Philip Knight, Nike's chairman and CEO.

Maria Eitel, Nike's vice president and senior advisor for corporate responsibility, said the firm has many ambitious environmental goals still to achieve, such as reducing factory waste...
