Joliet, Ill. - A former Army ammunition plant about 40 miles southwest of Chicago may yet become a landfill, though it stands to be significantly smaller than the facility originally envisioned by Waste Management Inc. and the Will County Board. A revised agreement between WMI and the county board that was ratified in late September by a 23-1 vote of the board calls for 280,000 tons of waste to be landfilled annually at the former Joliet Arsenal, near Joliet.

A Will County Circuit Court judge must approve the revision before county officials can accept the deed to the arsenal property from the federal government. If the judge rules in their favor, the county and WMI will seek the necessary permits from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. ...
