Senate Dems criticize Superfund progress.(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)

Senate Democrats last week criticized the Bush administration for slowing the completion of cleanups at Superfund sites, but an administration spokeswoman denied the allegations, saying critics aren't measuring the progress accurately. Over the past four years, the Environmental Protection Agency completed an average of 87 cleanups annually.
However, under the Bush administration, the EPA completed only 47 projects in 2001 and anticipates cleaning up only 40 Superfund sites in 2002, said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. ``Unfortunately, the most important parts of the program - the pace of the cleanup and the principle that the polluter must pay - are now under attack,'' she said.
