Illinois expects to have its first commercial wind farm operating by mid-2003.

The three companies participating in the project on June 26 announced plans for the 51-megawatt facility. The Crescent Ridge wind energy project will generate enough renewable energy to power 20,000 Illinois homes, making it one of the largest wind energy facilities east of the Mississippi. It could reduce annual emissions of sulfur dioxide by 1.4 million pounds, nitrogen oxide by 525,000 pounds and carbon dioxide by 250 million pounds, according to Illinois Wind Energy LLC, one of the project's partners.

The three participating firms are Commonwealth Edison, a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corp.; Illinois Wind Energy; and Tomen Power Corp.
