Retail Wal-Mart to sell biodegradable plates Santa Barbara, Calif. - About 90 Wal-Mart stores in Washington, Oregon and northern California began offering biodegradable EarthShell plates and bowls to customers July 9. EarthShell Corp., which manufactures the containers, test-marketed the packaging in Maryland and Oregon.

Wal-Mart approved the introduction of the containers in its northwestern region. EarthShell markets its sandwich containers, plates and bowls as an alternative to polystyrene foam packaging. The containers are made primarily from limestone and potato starch and are compostable.
