WMI, 12 others facing House accounting probe.(Brief Article)

Waste Management Inc. is among 13 companies coming under the microscope of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which is looking into past corporate accounting problems and scandals at publicly traded companies. Committee Chairman Billy Tauzin, R-La., wrote to each of the companies asking for details on the extent and quality of management oversight by their boards of directors.

The committee is asking for written policies and procedures and background information on board members. The committee chairman also wrote to Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Harvey L. Pitt asking for copies of correspondence between the SEC and the companies, results of any inquiries or reviews, and communications within the SEC about the companies. WMI...
