The world's fourth-largest cruise line is paying a $1 million fine after admitting that it dumped waste oil at sea for years. A plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice calls for Norwegian Cruise Line Ltd. to also go on probation and maintain an environmental compliance plan.

Norwegian received credit from federal prosecutors for reporting itself to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency after learning that a former employee circumvented a ship's oil-water separator. ``NCL deserves considerable credit for its early disclosure of violations, before the government's investigation became manifest and without any promise of leniency,'' said Tom Sanonsetti, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Environmental & Natural...
