Byline: Jim Johnson Weyerhaeuser Co. is shuttering a 100-year-old recycled medium mill in Ontario that the company acquired as part of its 1999 takeover of MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. About 140 people will lose their jobs after the mill in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, closes in early December.

Six workers will remain to operate a hydroelectric power dam located on the site, the company said. Weyerhaeuser is closing the plant as the packaging industry copes with lessening demand for its products in a down economy. The Sturgeon Falls mill produces recycled medium, the wavy layer used in corrugated containers.
