Alabama Power Co. will continue testing advanced mercury control technology under a U.S. Department of Energy program that already has reduced mercury emissions by 80 percent.
On Oct. 22, the Department of Energy chose Alabama Power, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Co., to install and test an innovative mercury control process at its E.C. Gaston electric generation plant near Wilsonville, Ala. The company will inject activated carbon, and possibly other material, into an ash collection system. The material should absorb the mercury, resulting in further mercury emissions. Testing will begin in early 2003.
