Three universities in New York and New Jersey face total penalties of $1.1 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for alleged violations of hazardous waste regulations. The EPA has issued enforcement actions against Columbia University, Long Island University and New Jersey City University for alleged improper handling and disposal of hazardous waste.

The EPA has cited violations of state laws and the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Columbia University faces the largest fine, a total of $797,029.
