Waste Management Inc. is reviewing its policies following a $2.5 million settlement with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection stemming from a records falsification scheme.
Waste Management, the country's largest integrated waste management firm, agreed on the $2.5 million settlement with the state Dec. 26. A five-month DEP audit found that employees at Waste Management's Evergreen landfill in Center Township, Pa., intentionally falsified records to conceal instances in which the landfill exceeded the maximum daily volume of waste it was permitted to accept.
Between Jan. 5, 2000 and Aug. 20, 2001, employees doctored the reports on 63 different occasions, said David E. Hess, secretary of the state...
