Xcel Energy Inc. will ask Minnesota legislators to allow it to store more nuclear waste at two plants in the state, but environmentalists are vowing to thwart the effort.
The company filed its 2002 Resource Plan with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission last month. The report addresses items such as alternatives to meet customer electricity needs but also indicated the company would have to shut down two nuclear power plants unless the state allows it to store more waste at the plants than limits set by state legislation in 1994.
If the state doesn't approve additional onsite storage, Xcel Energy likely will have to close its twin-reactor, 1,100-megawatt Prairie Island, Minn., nuclear power plant in 2007 and...
