The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office has charged Waste Management of New York and Kephart Trucking, of Bigler, Pa., with illegally transporting infectious medical waste.

A spokeswoman with Waste Management said one of the company's health care customers apparently put what should have been red-bag waste into the solid waste stream.

The charges, filed last month in a local district court, stem from an inspection of a waste hauling truck on May 21, 2001. The state decided to file charges after receiving the recommendation of the 18th Statewide Investigating Grand Jury, according to Attorney General Mike Fisher.
