Norcal Waste Systems Inc. and the city of San Francisco opened a $38 million recycling facility March 5 on Pier 96 in the Port of San Francisco.

The 200,000-sq.-ft. facility, called Recycle Central, is permitted to sort 2,100 tons of recyclables per day. San Francisco's Board of Supervisors has set a citywide recycling goal of 75 percent, one of the most aggressive in the nation. Recycle Central will sort material collected from San Francisco's single-stream recycling system and other residential and commercial recyclables.
