Byline: Bruce Geiselman Defense officials need to better coordinate cleanup efforts at former military bases with other federal and state regulators, according to a report prepared for Congress. The General Accounting Office report released April 28 credits the Department of Defense with taking steps to improve cleanup coordination at former defense sites but says clearer guidelines are necessary.

States have complained they don't receive adequate information from defense officials to properly oversee cleanup work at former defense sites and to judge the validity of cleanup decisions made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on behalf of the Defense Department.
