Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt is leaving the job he loves for a higher calling - to serve his country.

President Bush nominated the Utah governor to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Aug. 11 at the Marriott Hotel in Aurora, Colo.

"I selected Mike Leavitt because he is a trusted friend, a capable executive and a man who understands the obligations of environmental stewardship,'' Bush said.

It was the second time the president had to ask. In May, the White House contacted Leavitt to discuss the position. He declined because leaving his state post would be too problematic, he said.

Bush asked again early last month. That time, though, Leavitt decided his work was nearly finished in the state...
