Trio settles pricing lawsuit; Georgia-Pacific, International Paper, Weyerhaeuser deny wrongdoing.(News)

A trio of large containerboard makers is paying $68 million to settle a class-action lawsuit claiming the companies conspired to increase prices in the 1990s. Weyerhaeuser Co., International Paper Co. and Georgia-Pacific Corp. all denied wrongdoing in the settlement while still agreeing to split the cost of the agreement.

Buyers of corrugated sheets and corrugated containers - cardboard boxes - filed the lawsuit in 1999 alleging that the companies acted in unison to increase prices from 1993 to 1995. Containerboard is one of the most highly recycled paper grades and typically contains a high percentage of recycled fiber when manufactured.
