Byline: Bruce Geiselman Attorneys general for eight states filed a lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan against five of the nation's largest electric utilities, saying they are among the largest contributors of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, to the atmosphere. "Global warming threatens our health, our economy, our natural resources and our children's future,'' said New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who spearheaded the lawsuit, which was filed July 21.
"There is no dispute that global warming is upon us and that these defendants' carbon dioxide pollution is a major contributor.'' The states want a federal judge to order the companies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 3 percent annually for 10 years. "The...
