Organizers of the Slow Down to Get Around safety campaign only have to look as far as Pennsylvania to see the model they hope the entire waste industry will adopt.
The Keystone State has touted the program on a statewide level through a public service announcement campaign and on a regional level through the participation of Republic Services Inc. in the Philadelphia area.
"The industry came together on a statewide basis, competitors around the table, to do something that was very positive in terms of public relations and public awareness, and in this case, of course, worker safety. So it was something that everybody could unify behind,'' said Tracy Pawelski, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Waste Industries...
