GE doubles down on green.(General Electric Co)

Byline: Joe Truini General Electric Co. will pony up $1.5 billion annually as part of a new environmental initiative, banking on a "green'' future. The diversified technology, media and financial services corporation will double its annual research in cleaner technologies from $700 million in 2004 to $1.5 billion by 2010.

It also will double its revenue from products and services that provide "significant and measurable environmental performance advantages,'' such as renewable energy sources. Ecoimagination, the name of GE's initiative, aggressively will bring new technologies to market to help GE's customers address environmental challenges, said Jeff Immelt, GE chairman and CEO. "And we plan to make money doing it,'' he said....
