Del Monte to pay $13M at Hawaii site Del Monte Fresh Produce has reached an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to clean up soil and groundwater contamination at the Del Monte Superfund site in Oahu, Hawaii. Under the terms of the consent decree, Del Monte has agreed to carry out the EPA-approved cleanup plan at an estimated cost of $13 million, with completion expected in 2014.

The company also has agreed to pay the EPA's past and future oversight costs. Koa haole trees already have been planted in the area to clean up shallow groundwater, and deep groundwater will be pumped and cleaned using air stripping and carbon filters, according to the EPA.
