Byline: Bruce Geiselman Loyola University Health System in Illinois has signed an agreement with the state Environmental Protection Agency to shut down the medical waste incinerator on the hospital's Maywood campus within five years. Loyola, which operates one of the five hospital medical waste incinerators in the state, voluntarily agreed to permanently close the incinerator.

During the transition, the incinerator will continue burning the hospital's medical waste with emission levels below those required by its air permit, according to Loyola. Hospital officials are exploring alternative waste-disposal options and waste reduction and recycling efforts. Loyola incinerates 4 million pounds of waste per year.
