Oil spills impede floodwater cleanup in La.

Byline: Bruce Geiselman Leaks at several oil facilities in the New Orleans area have complicated efforts to pump floodwater out of the area and clean up the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. The largest spill is at the Murphy Oil Corp. site near Chalmette, La., said U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen Johnson.

"The company, as well as the EPA and the Coast Guard, are on the scene,'' Johnson said Sept. 14. "They have stopped the leakage, and the company is, with our assistance, remediating the problem.'' About 819,000 gallons of oil were discharged, and vacuum trucks as well as skimmers have been removing the oil.
