Retail Walgreen going solar in Calif., N.J. Walgreen Co. plans to install solar power systems in 96 stores and two distribution centers in California and 16 stores in New Jersey. The retailer has contracted ImaginIt Inc., a Denver photovoltaic firm, to install the rooftop systems, which will generate between 20 and 50 percent of the stores' electricity.

In total, the solar power systems will generate more than 13.8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. Walgreen touts itself as the nation's largest drugstore chain with 5,080 stores in 45 states and Puerto Rico. The company posted $42.2 billion in revenue in 2005.
