Hazardous Waste EPA changes rules for cathode ray tubes Federal environmental regulators are simplifying the federal hazardous waste management requirements for cathode ray tubes and CRT glass destined for recycling. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hopes the streamlining will increase the collection and recycling of CRTs, saying recycling saves energy and conserves resources.

It also reduces the amount of lead in landfills and allows the recovered lead to be reused. Under the new regulations, unbroken used CRTs are not regulated as hazardous waste unless they are stored for more than one year. The EPA is relaxing the standards for unbroken tubes because the risk of lead releases from them is very small, according to the agency....
