Military Army begins burning weapons in Utah The U.S. Army has started its largest single chemical weapon destruction campaign, preparing to incinerate 6,194 tons of mustard agent stored at the Deseret Chemical Depot in Utah. Workers at the Army's Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility punched and drained the first mustard agent-filled munitions on Aug.
18. Prior to incineration, the workers are sampling the material to identify mustard agent with elevated levels of mercury, which requires special handling. Crews will first incinerate the mustard agent that contains little or no mercury. During the next 18 months, crews will install special filters on the chemical weapon incinerators that are designed to remove the mercury from emissions....
