Byline: Bruce Geiselman Environmental Benefit: Internet search engine company Google is installing a 1.6-megawatt solar power system at its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters. The 9,212 solar panels, placed on building roofs and structures over parking lots, will be the largest corporate solar energy installation in the U.S., offsetting by 30 percent the offices' peak electricity consumption.
By reducing electricity bought from utilities, Google will prevent the release of 3.6 million pounds per year of carbon dioxide. Financial Benefit: Google and its partner EI Solutions estimate annual savings of $393,000. EI Solutions said the project should pay for itself in about 71/2 years.
