Bakke Passes Away.(Gus Bakke)(Obituary)(Brief article)

Staff Gus Bakke, who served as the first Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) secretary after the agency was established in a 1967 reorganization of state government, died June 17, 2006, in Menomonie, Wis. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin and World War II veteran, he was a Republican representative from Menomonie for three terms in the 1950s before being appointed to the State Highway Commission.
Bakke was chair of the commission when Wisconsin Gov. Warren Knowles tapped him to be WisDOT secretary, a position he held until 1971. In addition, he was head of the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association (WTBA), then called the Wisconsin Road Builders Association, from 1971-1984. The family held a private funeral...
