LAST MAY, MOZAMBIQUE'S Transport Minister Antonio Munguambe declared that after many months of delay, the railway between South Africa and Maputo will be fully renovated and operational by the end of this year. He also said that traffic from South Africa to Maputo port is expected to dramatically increase.

The Mozambican transport ministry estimates trade goods passing through Maputo cargo port increasing from five million tons in 2007 to almost 17mn tons by 2010. Currently, this rail link to the port is only operating at around half its potential capacity due to the constraints ...
