BLOCKS WERE AWARDED in October under the country's second licensing round since relations with the west were reestablished. The National Oil Corporation awarded 23 contract areas, out of the 26 on offer--mainly to European and Asian companies. Italy's Eni won three areas, and four applicants won two each--Norway's Statoil, the UK's BG, a venture between Japan's Teikoku and Mitsubishi, and Indonesia's Pertamina. ExxonMobil was the only US company winning territory.
